Brickify
Project Grantee
Brickify is a social organization founded in 2019 in Nigeria, that uses plastic waste to create low-cost building solutions for the community.
There are currently approximately 24.4 million homeless people living in Nigeria, making up 13% of the country’s population. This project helps to ease the problems of growing plastic waste, housing deficit, and extreme poverty in Nigeria with one solution – using plastic waste to make bricks, chairs, and tables. The bricks are then used to build low-cost residential houses, schools, public toilets, and kiosks.

Brickify collects plastic waste from households, communities, small businesses, and religious centers. Human partners are rewarded with domestic materials, school fees, meals, and transportation tickets, thus also contributing to easing poverty within the community. The plastic waste is then recycled into Lego bricks, used to construct the mentioned facilities. Brickify has so far recycled over 50,000 tons of plastic waste.

The bricks made by Brickify from plastic waste are wind resistant, water resistant, fire resistant, heat resistant, cheaper, and reduce construction time. They are 30-50% cheaper than conventional bricks, and they interlock like Lego, therefore they do not require additional materials to be added to the construction process. This innovative brick solution is currently being patented. Brickify has a running factory and has successfully built several prototypes.
